The thermostat acts as the central control point for the AC. This is where the AC gets the signal to start cooling, stop cooling, and know which temperature target to aim for. Thus, a malfunctioning thermostat signals an immediate problem for your AC. This might be the case, for example, if the thermostat's wires are disconnected, the thermostat's battery is dead, or the thermostat is exposed to an external heat source. For example, disconnected thermostat wires mean signals won't be traveling from the thermostat to the AC's mainboard, so the AC might not start when needed.
You may need the help of an emergency technician if your AC has developed problems without warning. Unless it is an accidental trip of the circuit breaker, you should get the malfunction diagnosed and fixed before running the AC again.
